Bathysphere is a voluntary deep-sea network of Norway-based deep-sea scientists and professionals who want to increase collaboration and knowledge-sharing across local institutes. Our aim is to foster collaboration, share insights into ongoing research, and discuss the latest developments and upcoming issues concerning Nordic and Arctic deep-sea environments.

Our logo has been designed by a collaboration between Hasan Arsan, UiB and Heidi Meyer, IMR and shows Bergen through a bathysphere window, typically showered by rain.

Bathysphere is named after the Bathysphere, a unique spherical submersible designed for deep-sea exploration. The Bathysphere was utilized by naturalist William Beebe and engineer Otis Barton for a number of dives near Bermuda from 1930 to 1934, marking the first time that a marine biologist observed deep-sea animals in their native environment. For us, it is a symbol of our deep sea community, its collaboration, and its spirit of exploration and discovery.

How it all started
Deep-sea science has been one of Bergen´s historically strong research and expertise areas with a number of institutions in the city operating world-class platforms and leading the charge in the exploration and understanding of these environments. However, there has been a need to bridge the widening gaps between different institutions to ensure better communication, collaboration, common ground between scientists and other staff working on the same subject matter – the deep sea.
Bergen Bathysphere started in 2023 when a couple of scientists in Bergen recognized the importance of initiating discussions and bringing together deep-sea scientists from local institutes. Our aim was to enhance the visibility of deep-sea science in Bergen, give our community a voice, and ultimately expand our network to a national level. Today, Bergen Bathysphere continues to thrive as a local community, serving as a “local node” within the broader deep-sea community in Norway.
